Dear All,

The end of the fall season is creeping up on us already, wow that went by really quick!! The mild fall weather must have been playing tricks on us.
We at Heartland want to thank everyone of you for supporting our organization, by playing in our league and our tournaments.
The fall 2017 season has been fantastic. We had a relatively low number of parent/coach issues which is great but, we obviously want that number to be zero.
Most of the divisions were extremely competitive which is very welcomed. As always there are a few discrepancies, but we will correct those for the spring.
One thing we do want to reiterate is that every coach must have a card in order to coach a game. Please ensure you understand the rule about the 2 division limit with guest players and double rosters. Not knowing a rule is not an excuse for breaking them.
We hope that you have all had the chance to visit our newest fields this season. We really are spoiled with the world class surfaces these players are currently experiencing, with possibly more to come.
Please double check the schedule for any games that were canceled as they will be played on the rain out weekend. No games will be played after Sunday, October 29 th .

Thanks,
Heartland Staff

The Referee Corner

Calling more fouls or letting them play - which one is right?
Last weekend I was mentoring the Referee team during a semi-final match in one of our local soccer tournaments.  The Referee told me during the half-time break that she was frustrated at her performance.  She was trying to figure out if she was calling enough fouls or if she should just let them play.  She was frustrated because of the comments of the coaches.
  • One coach kept saying, "come on Ref, let them play.  They are not kids!"  (For the record this was a U-12 match, so we might think of them as kids).
  • The other coach was concerned about the safety of his players because they were the smaller team.  He wanted to protect his players from injury.
Is this a scenario that you have been a part of during a Heartland match or tournament?

I decided that I would watch the second half as a mentor to help the Referee team and to make sure that any complaints the coaches or fans had were justified according to the Laws of the Game.  Since the score was 0 - 0 and the winner advanced to the finals, there was a lot of tension in this match and pressure on the officiating crew.

The match ended with the smaller team winning 1 - 0.  There were some fouls in the 2 nd half (I noted 11 possible fouls).  The officiating team called 8 of these fouls.  I had a different decision than the young Referee on the first 3 possible fouls, but we agreed on 8 out of 8 remaining challenges.  She has been officiating for 4 years (multiple centers during this time).  I have a few more years of experience, but we agreed on 73% of the possible fouls - pretty good.  And, none of the fouls were what would be considered "match critical events".  She and her team made sure the game didn't escalate to this level.

When we talked after the match, she felt better about her second half performance.  She decided that when she saw a foul, she would whistle it.  Her judgement was that a foul is a foul.  I agreed that was the appropriate tactic for this match.

The next time she is assigned a middle (and she will be) she will face the same dilemma.  As you can tell from this account, we are favoring calling fouls when they occur.  Will she, and will our other Referees get every call right? No.  But at least she has answered the question of how to approach the match.  With more experience on her part, and more games by the players, could this change in the future?  Will more skilled and experienced players have contact that is deemed fair instead of foul?  We can all agree that this is what experience brings.  But, even at the highest levels, a foul is a foul.

Would you agree?  We will keep working with our Referees to get them to call fouls.  We thank you for sharing this goal and helping.  Our next Referee meeting will talk about what happens when you let someone foul and don't call it.  Would you believe that players would actually retaliate and maybe do it harder than they were originally fouled?  Come join us at our next Referee meeting for a perspective on this situation.

The Midwest All Girls Tournament Paints the Complex Pink!
This past weekend, Heartland Soccer Association held the Midwest All Girls Tournament at the Scheels Overland Park Soccer Complex and Wyandotte Sporting Fields. This long-time classic tournament brought together thousands of girls , nearly 300 teams from throughout the Midwest to help raise awareness for breast cancer. It was truly amazing to see players, coaches, staff, refs and fans come together and turn the fields pink to promote breast health!

According to the American Cancer Society, screening exams for early breast cancer detection-before symptoms begin-are one of the best ways to fight the disease that is the second leading cause of cancer death in women. Sarah Cannon Cancer Institute at HCA Midwest Health-a cancer care leader in the region- is marking the 32nd anniversary of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month by emphasizing the importance of early detection and encouraging women to request an appointment online for screening mammograms or visit one of nine HCA Midwest Health locations, many of which are offering extended screening hours or walk-in availability during October. HCA Midwest Health is Kansas City's leading healthcare provider.

Hospital Turned Scheels Overland Park Soccer Complex
Pink to Kick Off Breast Cancer Awarenss

The award-winning Scheels Overland Park Soccer Complex turned pink  as thousands of girl soccer players representing 289 teams and more than 4,500 players from Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska and other surrounding states take to the fields for Heartland's Midwest All-Girls Tournament hosted by Heartland Soccer Association.  The  GO pink presence is designed to raise awareness for October's National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and remind women to get their mammogram because early detection saves lives. The tournament featured teams from seven states, drawing thousands of children, parents, grandparents and families from across the region in one of the Kansas City metropolitan area's largest all-girl annual soccer tournaments.

Referees, Tournament staff and Scheels Overland Park Soccer Complex staff were dressed in  pink attire and players used pink soccer balls during the tournament. Fans and supporters were encouraged to wear  pink to show their support. In addition, Menorah Medical Center and Overland Park Regional Medical Center had a display booth teaching women how to perform a proper breast self-exam and educating tournament goers about their nationally accredited breast programs, including mammogram and the benefits of their latest technology, 3D mammograms.

"We value our partnership with Heartland Soccer Association and Scheels Overland Park Soccer Complex as we work together to help keep kids safe on and off the fields," says Dr. Anne Kobbermann, M.D. Board-certified and Fellowship-trained Breast Surgical Oncologist at Sarah Cannon Cancer Institute at Overland Park Regional and Sarah Cannon Cancer Institute at Menorah Medical Center. "This community event also gives us the opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of early detection-and that it helps saves lives when it comes to diagnosing and treating breast cancer."

"Our partnership with Menorah Medical Center and Overland Park Regional Medical Center is a valuable asset to the community and to our organization as we make a positive impact with athlete's safety on and off the field," says Shane Hackett, Executive Director, Heartland Soccer Association. "Last year's event was incredibly energizing.  This year's unique partnership will help raise awareness for a disease that affects thousands of women each year- and what better time to do that than during one of the region's most popular all-girls tournaments."

In addition to promoting breast cancer awareness, the event had breast health information, giveaways and staff available to answer questions.

Sporting Kansas City, U.S Open Cup Champions

No Major League Soccer team has ever been crowned U.S Open Cup Champions more than Sporting Kansas City, who has won the title four times.  On September 20 th at Children's Mercy Park, Sporting KC defeated the New York Bulls in a 2-1 victory. The Sporting faithful fans were sure in for a drama filled, nail biting, too close for comfort game but as always the fans contributed to an atmosphere that heighted them into a definite 12 th man on the field.  Manager Peter Vermes has been with Sporting since 2009 and since he has led the team into a more successful program.  In 2012, Vermes won his first piece of hardware as Sporting's Manager when they won the 2012 Lamar Hunt U.S Open with a Penalty shootout win over the former three-time defending champions Seattle Sounders FC.  After last week's win, Vermes has successfully led his team to win 4 U.S Open Championships; experience is definitely on their side. All of the Sporting Faithful is hopeful that the rest of this season will be a successful one. Once again, experience is on their side; Matt Besler, Graham Zusi and Seth Sinovic have started all three Open Cup matches and are prepared to help lead their team to another victory, a bigger victory, the MLS Championship Cup.  Peter Vermes said it best in his locker room talk to his players after the U.S Open win, "This isn't the last one this year," he said. "Let's get it!"

Sporting has only two more regular season home games, September 30 th against The Vancouver Whitecaps FC and October 15 th against The Houston Dynamo. Get out there and be that 12 th man!

ATTENTION all 2007 to 2009 Boys and Girls!

Health Tip
Fall Allergy Tips from HCA Midwest Health

The crisp bite of the fall air means decking the kids out in scarves and sweaters so they can play in big piles of leaves. Unfortunately though, thanks to those leaves and other allergens such as ragweed and mold, fall can also signal another round of watery, swollen eyes, sniffling and sneezing.

And this year's fall allergy season will probably be particularly rough, thanks to a warmer-than-usual spring and summer.

Some data shows that warmer temperatures can generate higher pollen production and help encourage the growth of pollen-producing plants. The amount of rain we get in the spring also impacts the fall allergy season, especially in terms of ragweed-which is the most common fall allergen.

Aside from itchy eyes and a runny nose, fall allergies can also cause an itchy throat, itching inside the nose, swollen eyelids or hives; and in some people, it can cause fatigue and irritability. In people with severe ragweed allergies, it may trigger asthma symptoms such as coughing, wheezing and tightness in the chest.

Luckily, suffering from fall allergies doesn't mean you have to skip out on all of your favorite fall festivities. These quick tips can help you get a handle on your symptoms.

1. Skip out on yard work. If you're a fall allergy sufferer, it may be worth it to pay a neighborhood kid to handle yard work. Big piles of leaves and mulch are breeding grounds for mold, especially when it's damp outside, so raking and mowing may aggravate allergy symptoms.

2. Move your daily workouts to the evenings. Going for an afternoon jog isn't the best idea if you're dealing with allergy symptoms. Pollen counts are highest between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., and exposing yourself during those times can trigger the uncomfortable itching, swelling and runny nose commonly seen with fall allergies. Opt for an evening workout instead, when pollen counts are low.

3. Give your home an allergy-free makeover.
* Invest in a dehumidifier, especially for damp areas like the basement. This can help prevent the growth of mold and mildew.
* Change out your air filter before cranking up the heat for the first time to reduce dust mites. Frequently washing blankets and bedding is another way to keep these allergy-inducing pests at bay.
* Keep windows and doors closed, even on those nice fall days, to keep outdoor allergens from getting in the house.

4. Wash away allergens. A hot shower will rinse off pollen and other allergens from your skin and hair, and a quick trip through the wash will help eliminate them from your clothes, explains Silvers. It's also a good idea to wash your hands throughout the day - this will help to keep pollen away from your nose and mouth when you touch your face.

5. Try a nasal rinse like a neti pot. Using them at the end of the day when you're done being outdoors can help remove some of the pollen from the nose. Nasal rinses like the neti pot work by flushing the nasal passages with warm water or a saline solution. The water or solution rinses away mucus, dust, pollen and other triggers that can aggravate your allergy symptoms.

Note: Talk to your doctor before trying the neti pot - overuse could potentially aggravate the mucus membranes in the nose. And remember to read its instructions for use and care, as it varies by manufacturer.

6. Manage allergies with meds. There are many effective over-the-counter medications available for allergy sufferers. Fairly recently, the FDA also approved the sale of over-the-counter nasal sprays, such as Flonase and Nasacort. The downside to [the sprays] though is that they tend to work best when used on a consistent basis, meaning you'd have to use it every day to get the best results.

Coaches Corner

"This is not a caution in a U-12 game.  In fact, it is not even a foul..."

Every weekend in soccer leagues across the country young Referees are assigned to officiate youth matches with the instructions of keeping the players safe and calling fouls.  Heartland is a leader in developing the "next generation" of Referees.  From on-field Peer Mentoring to monthly education meetings, Heartland has made investments to deliver an even higher quality of officiating for you, our member teams.  We believe our Referees are getting better, and we continue to work on getting them to the next level.  Last month we talked about the development process - "You can't make a Referee in the microwave".

Referees spend 2 days in the Entry Level Certification class and need to pass a written test from the U.S. Soccer Federation before they receive their badge.  Each year these young officials are required to attend a "recertification" class to keep current with the Laws of the Game.  If they want to advance to the next level, they need to pass game assessments.  If they want to go to the State Referee level, there are more classes and more assessments from higher level officials.  And, if they make it to the MLS level they get every match recorded and spend hours reviewing their performance to make sure they made the correct decisions.  Heartland Referee alumnus includes people who are being assigned in the MLS as AR's and Video Assist Review (VAR) officials.  In other words, you must study and work hard to be a soccer Referee.

The number one concern from our young Referees is the comments they get from the sidelines.  We would never say that these sidelines comments are not right, but consider this recent post in Referee and Soccer Bits (Facebook), the author said, "If the sendoff of XK in the 11 th minute tonight is not a wakeup call that the new Video Assist Replay system has serious flaws, I give up.  This is not a caution in an U-12 game, and not even close to a sendoff at the professional level.  In fact, it is not even a foul."

I hope you can see the dilemma here.  An MLS Referee saw something on the field they wanted to review in more detail.  This Referee consulted with his highly trained VAR official.  And, together they made the decision that the player's actions deserved a Red Card for endangering the safety of an opponent.  So far, so good.  But then, someone else who does not have the training of the MLS crew decides that the action wasn't even a foul in an Under 12 soccer match.  That was his opinion.  Others that commented also had questions and many agreed with the decision of the MLS crew.

The moral of this story:  When did you last read the Laws of the Game?  You have the right to your opinion of the decision.  But, do you have to challenge the Referee on the field with your opinion of what happened?  Is it possible that the Referee was right?  Did someone else see it differently than you did? Do you remember a time when shouting at a Referee resulted in a changed call?   Thank you for your support of the Heartland Referee teams.
